The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is committed to facilitating the national implementation of the KiDS programme in schools to improve the lives of children living with type 1 diabetes, prevent diabetes-related stigma and promote healthy habits to tackle the preventable risk factors of type 2 diabetes.
IDF collaborates with its national members and partner organisations, such as the International Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD), to encourage decision-makers to implement the KiDS programme and leverages key dates to promote its activities and resources.

International Education Day
In January 20221, on the occasion of International Education Day, IDF and ISPAD, with the support of IDF Members and ISPAD collaborators, sent letters requesting the national implementation of KiDS to Ministers of Health and Education in 19 countries.
The letters highlighted how KiDS can:
- Improve diabetes knowledge in the school environment among students and school staff
- Improve understanding of the needs of students living with type 1 diabetes
- Help foster a safe and supportive school environment
- Protect children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes from stigma
- Support efforts to prevent type 2 diabetes by including education on nutrition and healthy lifestyles in national school curricula

International Day Against Bullying and Violence in the School Environment
In November, on occasion of the International Day Against Bullying and Violence in the School Environment, IDF and ISPAD, with the support of IDF Members and ISPAD collaborators, sent letters to Ministers of Health and Education in six countries. The letters called decision makers to implement the KiDS programme at the national level to:
- Improve knowledge of diabetes in the school environment among students and school staff
- Improve understanding about the needs of students living with type 1 diabetes to foster a safe and supportive school environment
- Protect children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes from stigma, and prevent bullying
- Support efforts to prevent type 2 diabetes by including education on nutrition, healthy food choices and healthy lifestyles in national school curricula
