Share details of your KiDS sessionThe school environment can present many challenges for children and adolescents living with diabetes. To manage their diabetes, they need access to a safe space to measure their glucose and take insulin. They also need access to drinking water, toilet facilities, healthy meals and physical education. Myths about diabetes can lead to stigma and bullying, causing further distress for young people living with diabetes.
Diabetes education can help make school a safe environment for people with diabetes by increasing awareness of the condition and how it can be safely managed at school. It also helps to dispel diabetes myths and tackle stigma.
Schools also play a role in helping children establish habits that they will continue into adulthood. By educating young people on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, schools can help them adopt healthy eating habits and regular physical activity that can help to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
