Advocate for Diabetes Education in School

Advocate for Diabetes Education in School

The aim of the Kids and Diabetes in Schools (KiDS) programme is to bring diabetes education to schools to fight diabetes-related stigma and promote healthy lifestyles to tackle the preventable risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

Our vision is that schools are  free from diabetes stigma, equipped to support diabetes care and promote prevention.

The goals of the programme are to:

  • Encourage policies that foster an inclusive school environment free from diabetes-related stigma.
  • Inspire the adoption of healthy habits from an early age.

Established in 2013, KiDS is an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) programme undertaken in partnership with the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) and supported by an educational grant from Sanofi.

  • Leverage key days during the year such as International Education Day or World Diabetes Day to contact local and national media outlets to cover diabetes education in schools.
  • Launch a petition to include diabetes education and the promotion of healthy habits in school curricula.
  • Collaborate with local school networks/associations to organise a KiDS session and measures to promote healthy habits at school.
  • Contact local governments and ask for funding to train teachers to provide diabetes education in schools.
  • Contact representatives from regional and national governments to achieve a commitment to ban the sale of unhealthy foods and drinks in schools and offer healthy school meals.
