What We Do

The KiDS programme promotes diabetes education in the school environment.

The programme helps children, parents and teachers understand diabetes, to tackle diabetes-related stigma and risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes.

Education

The implementation of KiDS at national level involves the support, involvement or endorsement of policy makers, local NGOs and other partners. This results in diabetes training sessions for teaching staff and regular diabetes education sessions delivered in schools. This type of implementation is currently operating or has been implemented in schools across 21 countries: Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Egypt, France, Ghana, Hungary, India, Japan, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, The Philippines, Thailand and UAE.

It is also possible to run ad-hoc diabetes educational sessions in schools in your local community. To support the implementation of diabetes education for children, KiDS has developed a wide range of education resources designed to support teachers to deliver interactive sessions on diabetes management and prevention, and healthy habits.

Advocacy

KiDS is committed to advocating for national policies that support diabetes education and prevention in the school environment.

Several diabetes advocacy resources have been developed with information and tips to help advocates encourage local or national decision-makers to bring diabetes education into schools.

IDF Diabetes Atlas

The International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas publishes data on diabetes incidence and prevalence among children and adolescents to support the need for increased diabetes education and support at school.

KiDS advocacy activities are also supported by data on government policies addressing diabetes at school. Data from a recent global survey of IDF member associations highlights where to provide support and resources for implementing diabetes initiatives and policies in schools.
